So when it comes to issues in daily life there is a point where it makes sense to think about aids that can help you in daily life. It doesn’t mean that you are giving up hope it just means that you are looking for a way to get help with the issues you have in your daily life.
As for me I started with simple trekking poles which we had tried in rehab. They helped me with my balance and I didn’t look disabled at all. People actually asked how my walk was not knowing that I didn’t went for a hike.
Soon it didn’t help me enough though as my feet didn’t really come of the floor. Which was when I started to use crutches.
Now with those you basically just need to try if you can get along with those and which type you need. Those below are the common type of crutched here in Germany. Now I know that in some other countries underarm crutches are more common. In this case you might want to try which type works better for you. As for me (of course underarm crutches are available here as well) I’d find them more annoying.
Now you might even find out that you don’t get along with crutches at all. In this case you might want do try a #walker. They can be a lot of help and aren’t to heavy. Some also come with a seat so you can take a break when needed. I tried one in Rehab and didn’t find it helpful at all, but as we all know…snowflakes are different. I had problems using the brakes safely and it was to heavy outside for me. Would not have had the strength lift it in a bus i.e.
And for inside…well it was to bulky. So in my case I preferred the crutches.
Now for me there was the day about 3/4 Year into MG where I found out that I might need a wheelchair as I just couldn’t walk long distances anymore.
Here we come to a point where I assume that many people are having different opinions about this topic. Let me underline the three basic types of wheelchairs. There is the simple hospital chair, rather bulky and not really made to propel yourself. It is more a pushchair and even than not the perfect chair for daily life as it is not custom made. So you might get issues with the back being the wrong one, or a side-width that isn’t really working for you. As for me…I really hate those chair.
Another type of chairs are power chairs. Some may be foldable and some can even turn a manual chair into a power chair like E-Fix does.
I’ve only used a power chair when my got repaired and I have to say…. I don’t like it as an aid. For me it is still to heavy and to passive. I just cant do anything anymore and it won’t fit in most vehicles I know of. Plus I know houses where I do have some stairs and where I couldn’t use it at all. (Which would be a real problem, since I can’t really walk at all). But it may be a very suitable chair for many others.
As for me I use an adaptive manual chair with power assisted wheels. For me it is the perfect chair to use with my tetraparesis. He fits easy in every vehicle, looks cools and I look sportive in it 😉 Sure I can’t go more than 1-2 km with it but that’t not bad and enough in daily life.
If you are having trouble breathing it might be an option for you to think about the topic „breathing assistance“. It doesn’t mean that you are intubated or that you are using a breathing assistance the whole time. But you might have an option at home for night or for those days where your breathing just sucks. I don’t have any experience in this topic, as I haven’t had my appointment in a ventilation unit yet, will come up though. Except for…C-Pap sucks for me like it does for many other MG Patients. It just wears me and my diaphragm out.
I have some other things like my handbike
mein Freewheel / my freewheel
Or my theratrainer
oder einen Duschhocker
or a shower chair.
But there is plenty of other stuff outside that can help you in your daily life.
I’d be happy if you would tell me your experiences, especially if you would allow me to use those on my blog. (without your name of course if you wish so)
